The screen you design for stopped sitting still. It folds, it listens all day, it splits into three panels in a truck cab, and sometimes it hands the job to a talking dragon. Apple, Meta, and GM all shipped something this fall that changes where your product lives and how people touch it. Let me catch you up.

The deep cut

  • Design for the space, not the device. Apple's iPhone Duo swaps controls by pose, so the same app has to reflow, not stretch.
  • Every reachable control assumes a hand. The Duo's right-side rail put left-handed users on notice before shipping.
  • More screen is a chance to show less. GM kept knobs and cut the app grid on a 60-inch dash.

The screen that will not hold still

Foldables were an Android niche until Apple's iPhone Duo pulled the whole conversation onto iOS. The forecast has it taking 25% of the foldable market by end of 2026, which is the number that gets you engineering buy-in. So the old instinct, fill the extra space by stretching your phone layout, is now a bug.

The better mental model is panes. A phone is one pane. Open the device and you get two or more related panes: list on the left, detail on the right. What must not change is the user's task and where they are in it. Fold or rotate mid-task and the app should keep your scroll position and form fields, not reload the world.

Easy to reach, for whom

Apple moved the Duo's controls into a vertical rail on the inner display and said the point was easier reach. Noah Davis flagged the obvious follow-up: easier for whom? The Dock sits on the right side, and The Verge and a MobileSyrup reviewer both wondered how that feels for a left-handed user.

Nobody knows yet, since the Duo has not reached buyers. That is the point. A perfectly logical spatial choice, wide screen so push controls sideways, created a usability question the moment it assumed one kind of hand. The fix is not a "left-handed mode." It is suspicion toward any layout that only works the way you personally hold the device. Test with your other hand before your next review.

Restraint reads as craft

GM went the other way and made restraint the headline. Its 2027 Silverado and Sierra spread across 60-plus inches of screen, but the center display defaults to two things: navigation and music. Sebastian Bauer, who spent 15 years at Apple and Google before joining GM, calls it an economy he wanted expressed in the interface. Knobs stay knobs. The app grid is gone.

The tell is what GM kept physical. Customers said they love real controls, so most physical touchpoints stayed physical, and CarPlay now lives in a picture-in-picture card instead of eating the whole screen. Bauer's rule against ripping out muscle memory is the lesson: more space is permission to show less, not more.

The interface that listens and talks back

The surface is also getting quieter and stranger. The Apple Watch Series 12's new sensor array takes heart rate every five seconds instead of every five minutes, and its Audio Intelligence turns the mic into an always-on tool with a transcript on your wrist. Apple wrapped it in a privacy white paper and opt-in defaults, betting that trust is the real feature in a year of backlash against listening devices.

Meta's Muse pushes further, a personal agent with a permission model and an activity feed showing each step it took. Claire Vo, who called it the best-designed personal agent she has tested, noted the avatar and tone did as much work as the features. When the interface has no fixed screen at all, voice and trust become the design surface.
