Plaud put an eSIM in its earbuds so the AI records without your phone
Plaud's integration of eSIM technology in earbuds exemplifies the shift towards AI assistants becoming independent, always-ready interfaces, potentially transforming user interaction and accessibility in wearable tech.

The AI assistant used to live in a chat box. You opened a tab, typed a prompt, and waited. That is changing fast. This week the assistant showed up in earbuds, in glasses, in your flight search, and in a startup that texts you like a friend. Let me catch you up on where the fight is really happening now.
The deep cut
- The interface is the product, not the model. Plaud, Legato, and Instinct all sell the same AI through a form people already wear or text.
- Recording is easy, follow-through is the sell. Plaud bets its case eSIM and Gmail hooks beat any AirPods plus note app.
- Feature names are tax on the user. Google's Spark and Daily Brief make people guess which button does the job.
The assistant moves onto your body
Note-taking turned out to be the easiest AI job to ship, so hardware makers have jammed mics into pins, rings, and pucks. Plaud's answer is earbuds with an eSIM in the case, so the thing records and uploads without your phone nearby. CEO Nathan Xu says AI needs "a wearable and an always-ready interface, one that people love to wear, is socially acceptable and private by design."
Legato is doing the same trick with hearing. Its founders came from Bose and the Meta Ray-Bans, and their AI hearing glasses use software to pick voices out of restaurant noise. "Our goal is to make hearing as ubiquitous as vision," Mehul Trivedi told TechCrunch. Both bets rest on a shape people already accept.
Recording is table stakes; the work is the pitch
Anyone can transcribe a meeting. Plaud knows that, which is why it leans on what happens after. Its agent connects to Gmail, Google Calendar, Notion, and Slack, so a meeting can produce an email or a doc before you get back to your desk.
The catch is cost and competition. The Verge pegs the Plaud One at $249.99, with heavy use pushing you into paid plans and a credit system. And your AirPods plus Granola or Fathom already do most of this. Xu says he is not really fighting AirPods, he is fitting his tech into a shape people like. That is the whole gamble.
The assistant becomes an agent that acts
The other shift is that assistants now do things, not just answer. Google's AI Mode can track flight prices and book hotels, pulling live prices from 300-plus airlines and finishing a booking with Google Pay through partners like Hilton and Expedia. You describe the trip, it builds the itinerary.
Money is chasing this hard. Instinct raised $350 million at a $2.5 billion valuation for an agent you text to plan road trips, buy groceries, and cancel subscriptions. Users have already flagged the tradeoff: the app asks for broad permissions and terms that spook some of them. An assistant that acts for you needs access to your life, and that access is the risk.
Clarity beats cleverness
While these products get simpler to use, Google's own app got harder. Sarah Perez laid out Gemini's branding mess: chat, Spark, and Daily Brief each get their own icon and slot. Google even promised "you shouldn't have to guess whether a task requires Spark, a Daily Brief, or a quick inbox search," then built an app that makes you guess.
The problem is bigger than one company. Claude asks you to pick "chat" or "Cowork." ChatGPT splits "Chat" and "Work." These are internal team names leaking onto the screen. Apple's plainer Siri approach, making familiar apps smarter without a new interface, may win for exactly that reason. Text bots like Instinct win the same way: one contact, no menu to learn.
Even Google's book feature shows the split. Gemini Notebook can now pull from books you bought, turning Radical Candor into advice on a hard employee talk. Useful and clear. The tech is not the issue. The wrapper is.
Three questions for your team
- If a customer already owns AirPods and a note app, what specific job does your hardware do that their setup cannot? Name it before you build it.
- Your agent needs access to act. What is the smallest set of permissions that still delivers the value, and how do you show that limit to the user?
- Count the named modes and features in your product. If a user has to guess which one to open, which ones can you fold into a single input?
