Stripe just paid $7 billion for a company that does one thing: it stands between your app and the AI models you call. That should make you stop and look at your own stack. The layer you route through, pay through, and depend on is turning into a product other companies own. Let me catch you up.
The deep cut

The tollbooth between you and the model
OpenRouter lets a customer pick from more than 400 models through one access point. CEO Alex Atallah called it "Stripe for AI." Now the real Stripe owns it, for over $7 billion, ninety days after a $1.3B Series B.
The numbers explain the price. OpenRouter was at $140M annualized revenue with about 70% gross margin, routing 250 trillion tokens a month, up from 50 trillion in February. Costs ran roughly 28.5% of revenue. That is software-company economics on a job most people thought was plumbing.
The lesson for you: the choice of what sits between your product and the models is not a small config decision. It is now a business other people are buying and building on.
The toll that wants to hit zero
The catch is margin. OpenRouter makes money by taking about 5% of the spend it passes through. That works until someone offers the same routing for free. The same week, OpenRouter cut GPT-5.6 Sol pricing and Vercel cut its AI Gateway pricing too. Model brokerage is a price fight, not a stable tollbooth.
So if you build on a router today, you are betting on its markup. When a zero-markup competitor shows up, your vendor either eats the cut or passes the pain to you. Neither is fun mid-roadmap. Ask now what your switching cost looks like if you have to move.
The revenue that makes the bets look sane
The spending behind all this is real, and it is fast. Anthropic's annualized revenue hit $65B at the end of July, up from $47B in May and $9B at the end of last year. OpenAI doubled to $40B. Anthropic is heading for a public debut at a $2 trillion valuation or more.
That growth is why money is flooding in. Databricks tried to raise $1B and drew $15B of investor interest, settling at $5B on a $190B valuation. CEO Ali Ghodsi said his phone "blew up" after a leaked report. The demand is not the question. Whether it pays off at these prices is.
The discipline hiding under the hype
Not everyone in the room is euphoric. In Thrive Capital's first investor letter, Joshua Kushner chided rivals for chasing "hyperincremental technological turns" and spray-and-pray betting. Thrive puts roughly 90% of each fund into its top 15 bets. His line: "not every fast-growing business is exceptional. And not every exceptional company is a great investment at every price."
Same rule applies to your dependency list. You do not need a router, a gateway, a memory layer, and an eval harness from four different vendors because each raised a big round. Pick the few you trust and go deep. Ben Thompson's worry about a capital constraint is the reminder: the bill for all this compute is not paying for itself yet.
