The materials are changing, and so is who does the work

Designers are testing new physical and experiential building blocks right now. Fabric that snaps between shapes. Materials grown from mushrooms and algae. Art that asks you to climb it, not just look at it. These are not gallery curiosities. They are hints at how your next product could feel different from everyone else's. Let me catch you up on what actually shifted and what you can take from it.
Fabric that thinks without a chip
A Harvard team led by Kausalya Mahadevan built machine-knitted fabric that snaps between stable 3D shapes without rigid parts. The behavior comes from yarn choice and knit geometry, not electronics. They wove in conductive yarn and turned a snapping shell into an on-off switch for an LED. Another version counts knee bends. A third changes lamp colors as the fabric shifts.
The part that matters for you: they used standard industrial knitting machines, the kind already running in garment factories. So the interface lives in the material itself, no added sensor stack. If your product wraps around a body or a surface, some of your logic could move into the physical form. That trims parts, cost, and failure points.
Sending signals to the skin
Most wearables shove information into your eyes or ears. Designer Haji Yang went a different way with Live Beats, a concept headphone with four tentacle-like arms that tap your cheeks in time with music. When ambient noise gets loud, it stops fighting the noise and taps the rhythm against your skin instead. The tips swap out, so a soft sponge or a cool metal tip changes how a song feels.
It is a concept, not a shipping product. But the idea is worth stealing. Touch is a channel you are probably ignoring. Navigation cues, alerts, accessibility, all of it can ride on the skin when a screen or a speaker is a bad fit. Ask where your product is fighting a loud, bright, busy environment and losing. That is where a tap beats a notification.
The catch with materials you grow
There is real pull toward living and grown materials. Teresa van Dongen builds design powered by microbial ecosystems, collecting mud from a harbor to run electric life through bacteria. A digital archive of sustainable materials now gathers everything from mycelium to algae so designers can actually find and use them.
Here is the tradeoff. Living materials behave. They shift, they need feeding, they are not the same batch twice. That is a headache for a supply chain built on sameness. Do not swap a stable material for a living one just to claim it. Start with one visible, low-risk part where variation reads as character, not as a defect, and where sourcing is real today.
When play needs a little risk
The experiential lesson is sharper. Writer Kat Barandy climbed Cj Hendry's twenty-foot inflatable maze with no railings and no nets, just grippy socks, and called it a rare thrill. She ties it to "risky play," a term from a 2024 study in Planning Theory & Practice: physical play with uncertainty and a chance of injury. Her verdict on most interactive installs is blunt. When the visitor's role is fully scripted, the thing goes dead and becomes a photo op.
That separates interaction from agency. A ball pit invites engagement but asks nothing back. Takako Saito's work, by contrast, turns spectators into players they can touch, rearrange, and change. Léa Mestres builds body-scale forms that leave the final function up to the person using them. The lesson for your product: let people change conditions and affect each other, not just tap through a set path.
The deep cut
The two threads connect in one move. Harvard put the intelligence in the material, and the play pieces let the material shape the experience instead of a script. Both take control away from a rigid, pre-defined layer and hand it to the physical thing and the person using it. So the real question for your next feature is not "what sensor do we add." It is "what can the material or the interaction do on its own, and where can we stop scripting the user's every step." Pick one place in your product where you over-specified the path, and open it up. Give people a manageable risk, a real choice, or a signal they feel instead of read. That is the difference between a demo people photograph and one they keep coming back to.
Three questions for your team
- Where in our product are we adding a sensor or a chip to do a job the material or form could do by itself?
- What information are we forcing through the screen that would land better as touch, especially when the user is in a loud or busy setting?
- Which "interactive" feature have we fully scripted, and what would change if we let users alter the conditions or affect each other?
