The tongue, the chair, and the door handle: why touch is back on the roadmap

Screens got flatter. Interfaces got faster. Somewhere in there, a lot of products stopped feeling like anything at all. Now a handful of designers are pushing hard in the other direction, and their work is landing. Let me catch you up on what changed and what it means for your roadmap.
Friction, on purpose
The thing these makers share is a refusal to smooth everything out. Swedish artist Love Hultén builds synthesizers with motorized keyboards, tactile sliders, and sliders that travel their full range. His line is simple: "The instant feedback we get when interacting with something physical connects all the right dots in ways a digital interface never could."
That is a design argument, not a nostalgia trip. As interfaces go invisible, Hultén exposes the mechanism. Motors stay visible. Switches click. The point is not to look retro. It is to give the body something to do.
For your team, the takeaway is concrete. Frictionless is not always the goal. Sometimes the click, the drag, the weight of a control is the product.
Play as the way in
A few of these projects treat play as a method, not a gimmick. Ayumi Tsuchiya's wooden pieces get climbed on, rocked, and pushed before anyone reads a label. She noticed something useful: "When adults see my work, they initially try to ask how to use it, but children first touch it and understand how to interact with it through experience."
That gap is a usability signal. If people reach for instructions first, the form is not doing its job. Good form tells your hand what to do.
Dan Ortiz Leizman, who strings up cheap plastic chairs and turns them into harps, put a finer point on it. "Play leans into a kind of improvisation that we consider safe. It emboldens people to let their guard down." People who feel safe will try things. That is the whole game in onboarding.
When touch pulls people back to a task
The playful stuff is not just art. It is being aimed at real behavior problems. Brunel graduate Wing-See Yau built Yomi, a Tamagotchi-style device that turns reading time into points that grow a digital pet. Her research found only 33 per cent of UK children say they enjoy reading, with many drifting to screens instead.
Her choice worth noting: she built a dedicated device, not an app. She did that on purpose, "to prevent children from switching their attention to other activities like social media or games." A separate object with one job beat a feature buried in a phone.
Sit with that if your product lives inside a crowded app. A single-purpose thing people can hold sometimes wins the attention fight that a screen tab loses.
Touch as access, not decoration
Tactile design is also how you reach people a keyboard leaves out. Augmental's MouthPad is a dental retainer with a pressure-sensitive trackpad against the palate. It reads tongue movements to move a cursor. It is now on public sale in the US, used by more than 100 people with mobility challenges, some wearing it up to 16 hours a day.
The numbers matter for anyone weighing input methods. One user hit 10.47 bits per second on a cursor task, which the company compares to implanted brain-computer interfaces. Same ballpark of control, no surgery. More than 6,300 people are on the waitlist, including surgeons, pianists, and mechanics.
Accessible input is not a niche checkbox here. It is a real market that the standard mouse-and-keyboard setup never served.
The version that lasts
One more move is worth your attention because it is about durability, not novelty. FSB relaunched a 1986 Dieter Rams door handle, swapping the old plastic parts for all-metal aluminum. The original got discontinued in 2005 because the thermoplastic part wore out.
The design still reads clearly by hand. As Rams scholar Klaus Klemp put it, "The circle communicates the turning movement, while the recess and the softly curved handle naturally indicate the position of the hand." Your fingers know what to do before your brain catches up.
The update kept the form and fixed the material so it now develops a patina instead of failing. That is the boring, expensive lesson: the feel was right; the substance had to catch up.
The deep cut
The common thread is not "add texture to make things nice." It is that touch does work a screen cannot. It tells a hand what to do without a label. It pulls attention away from other apps. It reaches people who cannot use a keyboard. And when the material is right, it lasts long enough to earn a patina.
So on Monday, look at one flow where you removed friction to feel modern. Ask whether the click or the weight you sanded off was actually carrying the meaning. Sometimes the tactile detail is the feature, and you cut it to hit a spec.

- Where in our product does a user reach for the manual first? That is a spot where the form is not telling their hand what to do, and it is fixable.
- Which of our flows lives buried inside a busy app that we could pull into one focused surface, physical or not, so it stops losing the attention fight?
