As Waymo’s Robotaxi Fleet Grows, 16 Test Drivers Were Injured

But under all that, real people are getting hurt, and the jobs being created are thinner than the ones being replaced. Let me catch you up.

The deep cut

  • Count the human cost before you scale. Waymo test drivers took 16 injuries from hard braking while the fleet grew to 3,500 cars.
  • New jobs are not equal jobs. Waymo's largest depot, 80,000 square feet, will hire only about 70 people.
  • Vertical focus beats general ambition today. Genesis AI's Théophile Gervet says no customer pays for an 80 percent robot.

The people inside the cars are getting hurt

Waymo scaled hard in 2025, and injuries scaled with it. Transdev, which manages Waymo's test drivers, reported 16 injuries tied to hard braking or sudden swerving across three cities, up from five the year before. One Phoenix driver spent 157 days off work after the car braked hard "without any obstruction." Zoox reported eight more.

These are not freak events. Contractors call them "brake jabs," and they said the cars were still doing it as recently as July. Four of Zoox's 2025 injuries happened after the company issued a recall meant to fix the problem.

The takeaway for you is simple. When your product touches the physical world, the people testing it absorb the failures first. Price that in.

The rideshare driver became the janitor

When robotaxis outmode Uber and Lyft drivers, some of those drivers end up servicing the robots. Former Lyft drivers now clean, charge, and inspect Waymo cars at depots. The ones who spoke up said they like it. Steady hours beat the gig grind.

The math is the catch. Waymo's largest depot yet is 80,000 square feet and will employ about 70 full-time people. One robotaxi runs around the clock and does the work of several human drivers. So the trade is many driving jobs for a handful of service jobs.

SHRM's Alexander Alonso frames it as the "redesign of work," and he has a point. But redesign here means fewer seats. Do not sell your team a story where automation just shifts people sideways. Some of that shift is a cliff.

The robots that stay in the lab

The money says robotics is ready. a16z raised $1.1 billion for a "Machine Age" fund to build the physical guts of AI. Generalist hit a $3 billion valuation on a model that learns tasks from short video clips. But Unitree, China's top robot maker, lost nearly half its $66 billion value in a week.

The gap is capability. Robots can move, but they still can't do work worth paying for. One founder called the field's "GPT-2 era", the stage before anything useful shipped. The teams making money picked one job: solar farms, excavators, warehouse arms.

Gervet of Genesis AI put the trap plainly: "No customer cares about the general purpose robot that works at 80% success rate." If you are betting on physical AI, bet on a narrow task that pays, not a demo that impresses a VC.

The sensor fight is a proxy for how much you trust the world

Waymo took a public swipe at Tesla, saying cameras alone "aren't enough" after 200 million autonomous miles. Its VP of Onboard Software argues you need lidar and radar too, so one failed sensor never blinds the car. Tesla says cameras and enough data are plenty.

This is not just a hardware argument. It is a question of how much redundancy you build before you remove the human. New Jersey is weighing a law that would ban camera-only robotaxis outright. The safe path costs more and moves slower. Waymo runs 500,000 paid trips a week; Tesla is still catching up.

Meanwhile Waymo is selling comfort, hiring Martha Stewart to pitch its new "living room on wheels." The marketing is soft. The engineering bet underneath it is not.

Three questions for your team

  • Where in our roadmap does a human absorb the cost of a product failure, and have we actually counted it the way Waymo's OSHA reports counted brake jabs?
  • If automation replaces a role on our team or our customer's team, are the new jobs real replacements or a 70-person depot standing in for hundreds of drivers?
  • Are we funding a narrow task that pays now, like Bedrock's excavators, or a general capability that still fails one time in five?
